JD Irving

Problem: Cavendish Farms, a JD Irving company, operates a potato processing plant on Prince Edward Island. The plant was fuelled by bunker oil, and the supplier of the fuel was discontinuing production, circa 2011. Cavendish Farms wanted a more environmentally friendly choice to the replacement fuel: No. 2 fuel oil.

Solution: JD Irving turned to Change Energy as Subject Matter Experts, to assess the feasibility of natural gas as the superior choice. The resulting study indicated that a Virtual Pipeline delivering natural gas from New Brunswick to Prince Edward Island was in fact a superior alternative. Change Energy acted as JD Irving’s owners engineers to execute this project, the first of its kind in Canada.

To deliver a turn-key project Change Energy Services worked with J.D. Irving to provide:

  • Feasibility study to determine the operational viability and cost savings associated with construction of a system to deliver natural gas to a high energy consumption plant via high pressure tube trailer

  • Process modelling design and functional description

  • Design engineering of a turnkey virtual pipeline system: mother station, trucks & trailers, daughter station

  • Equipment selection and procurement

  • Project management assistance including all necessary approvals, oversight of equipment installation and commissioning

  • Development of commissioning, operation and maintenance manual

  • Operator training
